What is Pilates?

The Pilates Method is a holistic system of movement originally created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s.

Rooted in strength, control, breath, precision, and alignment, the method was designed to help people move through life with greater ease, strength, and longevity.

Unlike trend-based workouts, Classical Pilates follows a structured system of exercises designed to work the body as a whole—starting from the core, or “Powerhouse.”

At Turning Point Fitness, we teach the method with purpose, helping you understand not just what to do, but why it works.

What makes classical Pilates different?

Originally called “Contrology,” the Pilates Method was created by Joseph Pilates as a comprehensive system focused on:

  • Core strength
  • Posture and alignment
  • Flexibility and mobility
  • Balance and control
  • Mind-body connection

The method includes over 500 exercises and uses both mat work and specialized apparatus to help the body move more efficiently and effectively. It’s more than a movement method—it’s a restorative lifestyle that reconnects you to your body and supports lasting strength and balance.

At Turning Point Fitness, we believe Classical Pilates stands apart because it follows a structured system with purpose behind every exercise.

This is not random movement.

It’s a method designed to help you build lasting strength from the inside out.
